Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to clarify the structure of mothers’ perceptions regarding the use of child development support services for children requiring medical care.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 parents of children requiring medical care who had used child development support services. Results were analyzed using the KJ method.

Results: Mothers’ perceptions included the following [looking for services that are enjoyable, safe and stress-free for both mothers and children, with an eye toward starting school] [finding it difficult to locate services that would allow them to work] and [having difficulty obtaining simple procedures and supportive consultation services]. While mothers were seeking appropriate services for themselves and their children, they experienced difficulties in finding services that would allow them to work and in navigating the necessary consultation procedures.

Conclusion: To create an environment in which mothers who wish to use child development support services can access them smoothly, it was suggested that nurses supporting families at home listen to mothers’ thoughts while considering appropriate services for both mothers and children, as well as support systems that enable mothers to work, and facilitate collaboration between relevant institutions and mothers so that mothers feel comfortable seeking consultation.
