Objective: This study aimed to clarify the concept of awareness among individuals with mental disabilities and define awareness in this context.
Methods: We analyzed 34 studies using Rodgers and Knafl’s (2000) conceptual analysis.
Results: Four attributes of awareness were identified: (1) subjective sensations of mental illness, (2) acceptance based on one’s own understanding, (3) the surrounding living environment, and (4) objective self-perception. Four antecedents and four consequences were identified.
Conclusion: Awareness among people with mental disabilities is defined as “The process by which individuals with mental disabilities perceive themselves—including their living environment—from both subjective and objective perspectives, encompassing both physical and mental aspects, based on their own sensibilities.”
