Abstract

There are many pet foods/supplements on the market that claim to improve the feces odor of dogs and cats. There are several reports to clarify these effects. In this review, the chemical components of the fecal odor of companion animals are introduced. The relationships between the pet foods/supplements and their fecal odor are reviewed based on the origin of protein and the grain presence in the pet foods, probiotics, prebiotics, and adsorbents as the supplements, and fecal properties. The sensory evaluation which is important to evaluate the fecal odor is introduced. In addition, the effect of the bamboo powder on the feces odor of dogs is mentioned.
