Abstract
This paper describes an experimental and analytical study on the fracture resistance behavior of GFRP woven laminates at low temperatures. CT tests were carried out at room temperature, liquid nitrogen temperature (77 K) and liquid helium temperature (4 K) to evaluate the effects of temperature and geometrical variations on the critical values of the fracture mechanics parameters. During the CT tests, AE method was implemented to assist in identifying the occurrence of damage. AE signals can identify the critical load at which gross failure occurs. A finite element analysis was also done to calculate the strain energy release rate and J-integral. Critical load levels, and the geometric and material properties of the test specimens were input data for the analysis.
