Abstract
A formulation is proposed to estimate the largest time-history response without use of the direct time integration of the equation of motion on the premise that the Fourier coefficients of the input excitation wave are made known. The estimation is carried out on the basis of the stationary condition of the general solution of the equation of motion with respect to the phase angle and the interval of the extremes. The effect of the superposition of the input wave components is dealt with the notion of energy equivalence. The validity of the present formulation is demonstrated by the Monte Carlo simulation in regard to N excitation wave components.
