Abstract
In order to investigate formation process of the energy spectrum in the atmospheric mesoscales, we performed numerical experiments of forced turbulence in a rotating stratified fluid and considered energy cascade processes. When the spectral distribution of the dynamical forcing is concentrated in small scales, upscale energy cascade is not enough to form a -5/3 spectrum as far as the realistic parameter range. It suggests that upscale energy cascade like 2D turbulence is not proper as a formation mechanism for the mesoscale spectrum. On the other hand, the spectral slope generated by downscale energy cascade is not sensitive to static stability with a rotation and is close to -2, while it is sensitive without a rotation. In the mid- and high latitudes, the observed spectrum in the atmospheric mesoscale can be interpreted in terms of downscale energy cascade in stratified turbulence.
