Abstract
An approximate analytical method is developed for calculating theprobability density of the response of a Duffing oscillator subjected tonarrow band random excitation when the jump phenomenon occurs. Using the condition of multiple amplitudes of the stationary response under harmonic excitation, the bifurcation condition which divides the response into large and small amplitude state is evaluated and the probability of each state is derived. The local probability density function of each state is obtained byemploying the equivalent linearization method, and the probabilitydensity function of the overall response is derived by sum of theselocal probability density functions weighted with the probability ofeach state. In the illustrative example, the calculated probabilitydensity functions are compared with the Monte Carlo simulation results.
