This paper conducts a comparative study into the stylistics of Japanese and English by surveying R. L. Stevenson's stylistics, considering the literary problems presented in his essay, ‘On Some Technical Elemenls of Style’, and contrasting this with the work of Japanese writers. This comparison sheds light on the characteristics of each language and the difference between them and, in turn, acts as an aid to mastering the art of writing in both.
