Purpose: Based on experiences of psychiatric nurses with unpredictable suicide cases, this study aimed to analyze the viewpoints that are necessary to identify suicide risk among patients with chronic-stage schizophrenia.
Method: A semi-structured interview was conducted with 10 nurses working in a psychiatric ward, to obtain data related to the patients’ experiences with suicide; these nurses had experienced unpredictable suicide cases in patients with chronic-stage schizophrenia. In addition, the obtained data was subjected to qualitative and descriptive analysis was performed on the data.
Result: The following viewpoints were determined as necessary by nurses for identifying suicide risk in patients with chronic-stage schizophrenia: “latent mental symptoms”, “transition to psychomotor excitement, patient’s unique sense,” and “negative impacts associated with prolonged nurse–patient relationships”.
Conclusion: The approach that focuses on the “negative impacts associated with prolonged nurse–patient relationships” can lead to suicide prevention and effective support for patients with chronic-stage schizophrenia.
