At the Executive Committee meeting of the Japanese Association of Petroleum Technology (JAPT), it was decided that the results concerning the achievements and prizes awarded by JAPT for 2016 and 2017 were not appropriate. Therefore, based on the record of past awards, this study attempts to determine what the extent of the problem is. Concerning the performance award, there was a small number of eligible companies due to the consolidation of oil companies in the 2000s, resulting in a strong impression of the winning companies being rotated to win the prize.
Additionally, the internationalization of the oil and gas technology industry has led to a decrease in the number of Japanese submissions to JAPT as well as a decline in the number of screening subjects. There is a high probability that the number of papers submitted will decrease in the future due to a decline in the number of geoscientists and engineers. The activities of young geoscientists and engineers will gain importance concerning the start of the oil and gas development industry based on the words of the first president Tsunenaka Iki of JAPT : “Oil in the place with the technology.”
