Abstract
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) are expected to play an important role in the future. A composite storage cylinder is used for FCVs. To prevent the cylinder from bursting in the case of a fire accident, it is required that a thermally activated pressure relief device (TPRD) is attached to the cylinder. In order to investigate the safety aspect of the TPRD system, a bonfire test is required in Global Technical Regulation No.13. However, it is recognized that the reproducibility of test results is an issue. It is necessary to appropriately standardize the flame shape, the burner configuration, monitoring points of temperature, etc. to improve the reproducibility. In this study, a simulation model for the bonfire test was developed in order to contribute to standardization. The diffusion flame of propane and heat transfer to a cylinder are simulated simultaneously with OpenFOAM which is an open-source code of computational fluid dynamics.
