According to UN-ECE WP29, autonomous vehicle systems, under their operational design domain, shall not cause any traffic accidents resulting in injury or death that are reasonably foreseeable and preventable. To realize this principle, a safety assurance framework for autonomous driving systems was published as ISO 34502 in Nov. ’2022. In this report, the contents of ISO 34502 are reviewed, and methodologies for safety assurance developed by Japanese experts, JAMA and SAKURA, for safety assurance are introduced. Also, the current status of related international standardization activities by ISO/TC22/SC33/WG9 is introduced.
