Abstract
If 'anzen' is defined as a standard or certification, and 'anshin' as peace of mind as human beings, is the social system that supports our food supply healthy? This article focuses primarily on the "environment" of egg-laying hens. As a social system that has been perfected as a livestock factory, the 'environment' of this modern system is highly efficient. However, we must also confront the undesirable consequences of this modern system.
'Mass production and mass consumption' have made our lives more convenient and abundant. On the other hand, excessive consumption has placed a significant burden on the natural environment and has become so severe that it threatens the health and lives of humans and other living beings. The social system of food production will not disappear as long as there is demand for it, but if the demand disappears due to a change in consumer awareness, the 'environment' will also disappear.
Ethical consumption is one form of ethical consumer behavior. SDG Goal 12 is 'Responsible Production and Consumption.' However, we must not abandon our efforts to transform social systems in order to build a sustainable society that takes into account the environment, society, and people, based on scientific analysis of the invisible aspects of livestock food production.
