Abstract
This study used a mirroring procedure to promote interpersonal behaviors of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorde(r ASD). We recorded scenes of natural interpersonal interaction in a kindergarten setting and calculated the frequency of the participant performing the target behaviors, including attention, movement imitation, pleasant facial expressions, and uttering mand(request)and tact(label). Results of the study using a single case design demonstrated changes in the frequency of four of the five target behaviors. The most significant effect of the intervention was observed on tact, which was reinforced by responses and the agreement of others. Also, interpersonal attention and pleasant facial expressions consistently increased under the mirroring procedure. Evaluation of social validity made by the person in charge indicated the formation of rapport between participants and researchers. These results are consistent with the findings of previous studies suggesting that mirroring enhances empathy. It is necessary to replicate these results in a future study to confirm the applicability of mirroring procedures.
