The Japan Air Self-defense Force (JASDF) C-130 cargo aircrafts used to provide aeromedical
evacuation are extremely noisy (89 dBA-93 dBA) and this prevents vocal communication and/or
auscultation with stethoscope. In 2007, Aero Medical Evacuation Squadron was establishment
equipped with a special container for aeromedical evacuation. Then in the simulated noise
environment as a C-130 noise, we evaluated amount of the noise reduction and its effect on vocal
communication and auscultation. Vocal communication and breath sound auscultation tests were
performed by JASDF flight surgeons. As a result, the threshold of noise for the vocal communication
and breath sound diagnosis was 80 dBA and 70 dBA, respectively.
