The Attitude test, which is a personality test, was developed by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force
more than 20 years ago. It has been used to measure the examinees’ characteristics and their
motivation to fly. The scores of this test are used for the interview examination in the pilot selection
process. This test consists of 60 items, and the responses are scored on a 3-point scale (0: disagree,
1: unclear, and 2: agree). The Attitude test assesses six scales measuring emotional stability,
deliberation, adaptability, objectivity, activity, and continuousness.
In this study, the examinees were divided into groups, and the group differences based on the
Attitude test have been examined. Our results show that there are practically meaningful group
differences between the National Defense Academy students, senior students of general universities
and aviation cadets, and males and females. The Attitude test may be used separately within-group
norms for scoring and reporting purposes.
