Abstract
In order to clarify the morphogenesis of intimal laminated elastosis in the arteries, the intrarenal arteries were studied electron microscopically. Kidneys from 8 dialysed patients dying of chronic glomerulonephritis were used. Ultrathin sections were stained with orcein. Marked cellulofibrous intimal thickening (“hemodialysis intimal elasofibrosis”) was observed in the intrarenal arteries, and extracellular substances were produced by myointimal cells. Consecutive elastic fibers were found by aggregation and fusion of elastic units. Cllagen fibrils were also increased in the intima. It is suggested that collagen fibrils may participate in the organization of elastic tissue.
