Concerning relationship between electrolytes and lipids metabolism in serum, few reports have published.
In series of in vivo experiments in healthy 10 persons, the relation between serum Mg and serum Triglycerides was studied.
i) Mg load test
Significant decrease (p<0.01) of the levels of serum TG were noticed after 60 minute by intravenous infusion of MgSO4 2.0g.
ii) TG load test
After 15 minutes in intravenous loading of 10% Intralipid 500ml, which is rich in TG and contains only 0.006mg/dl of Mg, Mg levels in serum were significantly increased from 2.3±0.3mg/dl to 3.0±0.3mg/dl (p<0.05). Where as levels of Na, K, Cl and Ca in serum were not changed significantly.
iii) The change of LPL activity after Mg loading LPL activity was significantly enhanced from 0.056±0.013μ MOL FFA/ml/min to 0.098±0.015μ MOL FFA/ml/min by intravenous loading of Mg.
These results suggest that Mg is mobilized from the Mg pool in the body to raise the LPL activity and to enhance the hydrolysis of TG in vlvo.
