Abstract

The purpose of this study is to clarify the difficult situations which nurses face in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and effect factors. We conducted a questionnaire survey on the 17 difficult situations, experience and working condition of nurses. 343 nurses engaged in HSCT in the Kanto area were targeted. 199 nurses became analysis targeted (Response rate: 58.3%, Ratio of valid responses: 99.5%). As a result of factor analysis of difficult situations, three factor structure was extracted. Nurse's distressed situation that they feel cannot do appropriate nursing they want to, Difficult situations in providing information or decision support for the patients due to complexity and difficulty of HSCT, Difficult situations in unifying or collaborating a team including patients and their families. Factor 1 was shown as the most difficult situation. As a result of categorical regression analysis, difficult situations are related to 4 variables, such as “years of nurse experience” and “soc-13”, and 24% of the variance was explained. It is suggested that activation of communication among nurses and acquisition of stress coping ability are important. Activated corporation among various experts in HSCT seems to ease the difficult situations which nurses face.
