A full-scale mock-up model of the Space Shuttle was designed and constructed in Kitakyusyu-city . Wind resistance of this structure is extremely important by considering a huge overhang supporting orbiter portion and a relatively light weight as a whole. The aerodynamic characteristics were investigated by extensive wind tunnel tests using a simulated boundary layer flow. The fluctuating lift, drag and wind pressure distribution as the results of tests are described. A structural design is also briefly summarized by defining a load factor based on the optimum reliability concept taking possible failure cost estimates into account.
