Abstract

The authors intend to use WRF to prepare standard wind data for assessment of pedestrian wind environment and to investigate urban heat island phenomena. Before doing these investigations, the prediction accuracy of WRF should be confirmed. In this study, the occurrence frequencies and the vertical profiles of wind velocity obtained from observation at Daiba (Coastal area) were compared with those of WRF calculations. In order to well regenerate the vertical profile, appropriate surface roughness should be given to WRF. Thus, we used GIS to classify land-use categories and to give roughness length to WRF. The calculation results of WRF using GIS were compared with those of WRF using default values. The occurrence frequencies and the vertical profiles of wind velocity calculated by WRF were in approximate agreement with those of the observation. The differences between the two calculation results were little because the effect of roughness on wind velocity was small at coastal area.
