We reviewed 20 pediatric cases (males : 7, females : 13) undergoing tracheotomy between 1993 and 2002 at our hospital. Their ages ranged from 0 days to 6 years. The indications of the tracheotomies were upper airway obstruction (13 cases) and respiratory management (10 cases). Twelve cases (60 percent) had complications. Development of expressive language occurred in 4 cases (20 percent). These cases were administrated speech therapy except one case unable to attend speech therapy. One case (very low birth-weight infant) grew with slightly delayed expressive language development, and the other 2 cases (very low birth-weight infant : 1, laryngeal cyst : 1) grew with normal expressive language development.
