Operation for the Esophageal Cancer of the aged Patients

Abstract
Treatment for the carcinoma of the esophagus is now popularly applied. However, aged patients over 70 years old showed the high operative mortality and the low resectability due to the depression of physical functions.
We have analyzed aged patients of the carcinoma of the esophgus which were hospitalized at Nakano General Hospital from 1968 to 1972.
Aged patient 79 years old was successfully operated about two years ago, and still now good health.
The operative mortality rate in the aged patients over 70 years old showed 20% while that in the patients under 70 years old showed 0%.
The common postoperative complications were usually consisted of circulatory disturbances, pulmonary complications and postoperative leakage at the suture site. And delay of improvement of postoperative paresis of the intestine were observed in the aged patients, except these common postoperative complications.
Safety standard against one staged operation for aged patients over 70 years old were provided, and that were popularized and simplified.
