Morphological changes on the epithelium of the tracheal mucosa of DS-mice which had been exposed continuously in SO2 of low concentration as well as in NO2 were observed by mean of SEM, in comparison with the results by TEM and ultra-thin-section technique in LM. In exposed group, each cilia became undistinguishable, short, adherent and rough, and lost the directionality of the metachronal weve. While, non-ciliated cells were generally in accelerating stage of mucous secretion which we classified into four phases; preparing, beginning, increasing and terminal phase respectively.

Treatment for the carcinoma of the esophagus is now popularly applied. However, aged patients over 70 years old showed the high operative mortality and the low resectability due to the depression of physical functions.
We have analyzed aged patients of the carcinoma of the esophgus which were hospitalized at Nakano General Hospital from 1968 to 1972.
Aged patient 79 years old was successfully operated about two years ago, and still now good health.
The operative mortality rate in the aged patients over 70 years old showed 20% while that in the patients under 70 years old showed 0%.
The common postoperative complications were usually consisted of circulatory disturbances, pulmonary complications and postoperative leakage at the suture site. And delay of improvement of postoperative paresis of the intestine were observed in the aged patients, except these common postoperative complications.
Safety standard against one staged operation for aged patients over 70 years old were provided, and that were popularized and simplified.

Two cases of pseudosarcoma of the esophagus have been reported. Histologically, pseudosarcomatous change could be explained as being originated simply from squamous cell carcinoma. In this aspect, its presence would not be so rare.
Care should be taken so that concomitant intraepithelial carcinoma could be thoroughly resected under direct vision through esophagotomy.

Immunoglobulins derived from high and low titer horse anti-dog thymocyte sera (ALG) were injected into normal dogs and changes in the peripheral blood were observed. During the course of injections each dog was given a skin allograft in order to test the efficacy of these immunoglobulins for suppression of allograft rejection. Antibody formation against the injected horse ALG was investigated using immunodiffusion techniques.
The small lymphocyte count decreased quickly after a single injection of each-ALG, but the degree of the lymphopenia was not correlated with the in vitro titers of this immunoglobulin for cytotoxicity and leukoagglutination. The lymphopenia was maintaned during the injections.
The activity for prolongation of skin allograft survival was found to reside in the 7S component or in the IgG of both the high and low titer ALS. Precipitation antibodies were found in all sera of dogs injected with the crude gamma globulin (CGG) or 7S component from both the high and low titer ALSs before rejection of skin allografts occurred.

Various kinds of foreign bodies (vinyl tube, metal fragment, glass fragment, rubber tube, peanut, soy bean, broad bean, peas, red bean, sesame oil, salad oil, pea nut oil, urocholine, moliodol and siccarol powder) were placed from the incised opening of the trachea and bronchus of rabbit under direct bronchoscopy.
Autopsy was carried out after certain internal for pathohistological examination of the trachea, bronchus and lung. The most intesne changes were noted after insertion of peanut and siccarol powder. Changes consisted of hemorrhagic pneumonia, atelectasis, and abscess. Thrombosis within the capillaries is especially characteristic. Even with the use of opaque media for clinical use in the bronchus, findings of bronchopneumonia was frequently noted for certain period.

52 cases of foreign bodies in the air passage, treated on our department during past 11 years, were reported. Most of foreign bodies were peanuts. There is little sexual difference and most of them were under 2 years old childrens.
The symptoms are stridor, cough and dyspnea, and let physicians to make erronous diagnosis as asthma or bronchitis.
Foreign bodies were removed by means of inferior bronchoscopy under local or general anesthesia. The latter is becoming routine.
It was emphasized that physicians must make exact case history, bearing foreign bodies in mind, to get correct diagnosis.

A 29-year-old female who has been surffering from athetotic cerebral palsy caused by meningitis developed in four-month-old was inspirated erroneously a piece of a black soy-bean in her air way. Bronchoscopy was carried out under the general anesthesia using ventilation bronchoscope (0.7×40cm) for removal. This procedure was done unsuccessfully because the foreign body could not be detected in the bronchoscopically visible area, and unexpectedly, a tumorous swelling of the posterior bronchial wall was found at the distal end of the intermediate bronchus, blocking up the passage of bronchoscope to distal bronchi.
On the chest tomogram, evident pneumothorax was found in the right lower field and marked shadow was seen extending from the right hilus to the right lower lung field. These bronchoscopic and chest x-ray findings led us to think that the foreign body might be inspirated into the distal bronchus beyond the tumorous swelling. The foreign body was spontaniously expectrated out 30 days after the erroneous inspiration, and the histological examination of the biopsy taken from the tumorous swelling revealed bronchial adenoma (carcinoid type). However, symptomatically and clinically, no active sign of tumor appeared during a period of one year followed up.

Case 1: Foreign Body in the Retropharyngeal Space
Thirteen year-old boy complained disphagia due to lancinating pain in the pharynx, originated just after eating bread and jelly packed in a glass bottle. Swelling in the neck on the right side was also noticed. X-ray examination revealed a small opaque spot in the neck at the level of the right piriform sinus, which could not be detected by laryngomicro-examination through a suspension laryngoscope. Extra-luminal foreign body was highly suspected by multidimension image-amplifier. Surgery through an oblique skin incision succeeded in extracting a piece of glass located in the retropharyngeal space with a massive hematoma. The piece matched exactly to the defect of the bottle of jelly.
Case 2: An Over-looked Foreign Body in the Esophagus
Fifty-one year-old man was sent to our hospital to reconstruct the maxillo-mandibular fractures two weeks after the first-aid therapy for the traffic accident in the other hospital. He was nourished by nasal tube feedings, as complained disphagia due to disability of mastication. We experienced no difficulties in inserting a feeding tube three times before and after operation. He discharged on the twentythird postoperative day, when he did not complain disphagia any more.
Three months later he felt some difficulty in swallowing bulky food. X-ray studies revealed a foreign body with a claw like shadow lodged in the upper portion of the esophagus. On esophagoscopy the foreign body was revealed at the entrance of esophagus. Though traction upon it threatened to damage the esophageal wall, we succeeded in extracting it by gentle manipulation under local anaesthesia. The foreign body was a piece of dental plate of maxilla staying for about four months in the cervical esophagus.
