Abstract
This is a case of cancer of larynx in a 50 year old male patient.
6, 000 rads of telecobalt irradiation was given preoperatively and 3, 000 rads postoperatively. 210 mg of Bleomycin and 5, 000 mg of 5 FU were administered preoperatively, and 100 mg of Mitomycin postoperatively. Total laryngectomy including hyoid bone and radical neck dissection of right side were performed. Patient showed satisfactory improvement for 3 months after opration, but there was a sudden large quantity of bleeding which seemed to be due to radiation side effect. 25, 000 cc of blood was transfused, and right common carotid artery was ligated. Patient died 5 months after opration.
This is also the review of literatures concerning radiation side effect in cancer of larynx and ligation of common carotid artery.
