Abstract

Characteristics of immobilized tannin for adsorption of heavy metal ions and the application of immobilized tannin for removal of iron ion from the water for brewing were investigated, and the following results were obtained.
Immobilized tannin well adsorbed iron, copper, and lead ions. Among iron ions tested, ferrous, ferric, chelated iron and iron ion in the presence of organic acid were well adsorbed on immobilized tannin, but ferrichrysin was not so much adsorbed. Adsorption capacity of immobilized tannin for iron ion was affected by the kind of iron ion, concentration of iron and pH in the adsorption medium. Iron ion adsorbed on immobilized tannin was easily eluted by 0.5 N HC1, and the regenerated immobilized tannin could be used repeatedly without loss of adsorption activity. The concentration of iron ion in column effluent was under 10 ppb, even when 8.5 liters of water for brewing containing 10-40 ppb of iron ion per 1 ml of immobilized tannin column were treated.
