Abstract

Yeast-lysing microorganisms (YLM) were isolated from waste water, yeast tanks and activated sludge tanks in the waste water treatment process of food factories.
Ten strains of YLM which could grow on usual nutrient media were isolated from waste water and activated sludge, and they belonged to Streptomyces sp., Oerskovia sp. and Bacillus sp. Like YLM-1 isolated previously in our laboratory, another 37 strains could not form colony on usual nutrient agar. These YLM similar to YLM-1 (YLM-1 type YLM) were isolated from all kinds of sampling places, especially from activated sludge connected with yeast tanks. It may be the reason that natural enrichment culture were carried out in these tanks.
YLM-1 type YLM resembled each other in their morphological and physiological properties, but they were tentatively divided into three groups by lytic activities to yeasts. There may be some relationships between agglutination with yeasts and lytic activities in YLM-1 type YLM.
YLM-1 type YLM may play some role in waste water treatment using yeast judging from habitats and lytic activities to yeasts. It is necessary for inhibiting YLM contamination in yeast tanks to maintain pH of the tank below 5.
