Effect of Ethanol on the Glutathione Efflux from Cells of Hiochi-Bacteria

Abstract

Effects of ethanol on the glutathione (GSH) efflux ofLactobacillus heterohiochiiH-1 were examined. For the cells growing in the logarithmic or early stationary phase, biosynthesis of GSH was promoted and efflux of GSH was markedly increased by the presence of ethanol in medium. The increase in GSH efflux from cells caused by ethanol was discussed in relation to the alcoholphilic nature of hiochi-bacteria.
