Operation, maintenance and inspection of life support equipment have been the major duties of clinical engineers (CEs). However, with the spread of a concept of task shifting which is redistribution of tasks among health care professionals, the roles expected of CEs have been expanding in recent years. For instance, in our hospital, CEs are engaged in vascular treatment as members assisting the treatment. Vascular CE is a CE who not only has knowledge and techniques required for an expert in medical device, but also sufficiently understands pathology of diseases subject to vascular treatment as well as various tests accompanying the treatment. As members of a team consisting of various medical professionals, vascular CEs are expected to play more essential roles in vascular treatment.
