A relaxation model is proposed taking both the oscillatory and dissipative modes of motion into consideration. The resultant velocity auto-correlation function is of the damped oscillatory pattern. Self-diffusivity and shear viscosity of a simple saturated liquid can be predicted from the equations derived from the model with the configurational internal energy and a parametric density which is characteristic to the substance. This density determines the probability of dissipative mode of motion. A simple relation of corresponding states holds for several liquids by employing the reduced density, which is the ratio of liquid density to the parametric density.
