Abstract
The effect of silica (SiO2) addition to the TiO2/WO3 system for the surface wettability and photocatalytic property was evaluated. Two kinds of structures for SiO2/TiO2/WO3 films were fabricated, i.e., colloidal silica was deposited on the surface of TiO2/WO3/Pyrex substrate (sample A), and a composite layer of TiO2 particles and SiO2 binder was coated on the WO3 film (sample B). These films exhibited highly hydrophilic surface under the dark in clean air for a long term (65 days). The photocatalytic oxidation of methylene blue adsorbed onto the surface was investigated, and as a result, the sample A exhibited the highest oxidation activity. The high activity of sample A was due to the efficient charge separation between TiO2 and WO3, whereas the charge transfer was retarded by the insulating SiO2 binder in sample B. The sample A exhibited the excellent sustainability of hydrophilicity and the anti-fogging property for a long term (100 days) under the indoor atmosphere.
