Abstract
We directly prepared anatase-type titania having visible-light photocatalytic activity by calcination of the mixture of titanyl sulfate and urea at 500°C. The property of titania photocatalysts was controlled by changing the mole ratio (R) of urea and titanyl sulfate in the mixture. A small amount of sulfur remained in the Ti-O lattice of anatase crystals produced at R<7. The photocatalytic activity of the sulfur-incorporated titania was relatively low under UV and visible illumination whereas the presence of sulfur narrowed the band gap. An increase in R removed sulfur from the lattice and induced an absorption band around 450 nm. Yellowish titania produced at R=15 showed high photocatalytic activity under UV and visible light irradiation. The high performance is tentatively ascribed to oxygen vacancy formed through desulfurization in the core of anatase particles.
