Sulfur-doped TiO2 powder was synthesized by calcination of an alkoxysulfide precipitate prepared by the reaction of titanium tetraisopropoxide with H2S gas in acetonitrile at room temperature. The obtained powder was characterized to have an anatase crystal structure in which sulfur atoms were incorporated into the substitutional sites of oxygen in TiO2 to form the Ti-S bonds, by using XRD and XPS. The sulfur doping caused the absorption edge to be shifted to the lower energy region. Consequently, gaseous acetaldehyde was photocatalytically decomposed into carbon dioxide on the sulfur-doped TiO2 powder much faster than on the undoped TiO2 powder under visible light irradiation as well as UV irradiation.
