Abstract
It has not been made clear sufficiently how the piles and soil stratum behave when a shock loading is given against piles of guardrail by car accidents. Recently, a construction method using earth reinforcement technique around piles is discussed which may increase the potential against shock loading. It is not easy to evaluate correctly the effect of reinforcement, because the conventional design technique considers neither stiffness nor strength of soil stratum and reinforcement material. This paper shows the results of model test in which lateral static or shock loading is given against a pile of guardrail. Applying 3-dimensional FE analysis to the results, this paper discusses also the design technique for the piles which takes the effect of reinforcement into consideration.
