Background: This retrospective study examined the association between short-term outcomes and malnutrition and sarcopenia in patients who underwent laparoscopic total or subtotal proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis (UC).
Methods: Of 30 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery for UC from January 2012 to March 2023, 22 were included in this study, excluding 8 cases of ulcerative colitis associated with neoplasia. Onodera's Prognostic Nutritional Index was used to measure nutritional status, and total psoas muscle area was used to assess sarcopenia. The effects of malnutrition and sarcopenia on short-term surgical outcomes were analyzed.
Results: There was a trend toward more postoperative complications and longer hospital stay in the malnutrition and sarcopenia groups. However, no significant differences were observed in operation time or intraoperative blood loss between the groups.
Conclusion: Laparoscopic surgery is acceptable for UC patients with malnutrition and sarcopenia, but careful attention is required for perioperative management.
