Villous adenoma of the colon-rectum is reported occasionally in U.S.A, but has been rare in Japan. Because of its characteristic appearance and high malignant potential, it was a medical topic until recent years.
This series is based on the 50 case reports of villous adenoma in Japan and summarized as follows : 1) There were 31 women and 19 men (female preponderance). 2) 44 cases (88 %) were located in rectum and sigmoid colon. 3) Melena and mucus discharge were found in 43 cases (86 %). 4) Invasive cancer were found in 11 cases (22 %). 5) The selection of proper surgical therapeutic management is important.
