A total of 245 patients with carcinoma of the colon and rectum was admitted to the Okura National Hospital during the 12-year period from Aug. 1968 through July 1980.
Of this group, 220(89.8%) patients had a single carcinoma, 10(4.0%) patients had multiple synchronous carcinomas, 4(1.6%) patients had metachronous carcinomas, and 11 (4.5%) patients had not only carcinoma of colon and rectum but also of other organs. These multiple carcinomas occurred more frequently than statistical expectation.
It can be said from this fact that the development of multiple carcinomas is different from that of single one. Any patient with carcinoma of colon and rectum should have a thorough examination over full length of colon and rectum before operation and should be followed up carefully afterwards.
