A novel monitoring method using a pollen sensor for real-time and automatic measurement of airborne sea salt particles was evaluated based on laboratory experiments and one year of field measurements. It was shown that the pollen sensor can distinguish sea salt particles from other airborne particles based on their polarization degree and scattering intensity. A strong correlation (correlation coefficient: 0.939) was found between the count of classified spherical particles measured by the pollen sensor and the amount of airborne sea salt obtained using the dry gauze methods. These results indicate that the particle count measured by the pollen sensor serves as a reliable indicator of the spatial concentration of airborne sea salt particles.
