Coal tar enamel lining is applied to steel water pipes as an interior protective coating. High bonding property has to be given to obtain a good durable coating. Application method necessary to obtain the above property has been examined and reviewed in this report.
The conclusions obtained are as follows:
1) Selection of proper coal tar primer and enamel is of utmost importance in view of the differences in their ingredients among the diferent brands.
2) There is no advantage in blasting the surface more than required. It is essential to find out the most preferable method by measuring the adhesive power of the film coating for each of the methods of surface preparation.
3) In case of hot enamel, the relation between temperature and time of the melted enamel adhering over the primer is of significance for the durability of the enamel. Preheating of water pipes in consideration of their heat capacities is necessary.
