Data for five years atmospheric exposure tests of various metals are now available from the extensive series of tests conducted by “The Study Group for the Prevention of Atmospheric Corrosion of Steel Structures in Japan”.
In this paper, these data were analysed and discussed with respect to various environmental factors. Regression equation were also derived to express corrosion behavior, i.e., weight loss vs. time. From the data for the initial year of exposure, correlations were found between weight loss and many factors, e.g., temperature, humidity, amount, of salt particles and degree of SO2 contamination. However, only the content of salt particles and SO2 contamination showed correlations with corrosion behavior, if the latter, in terms of weight loss, was averaged for five years.
It was concluded, therefore, that the effectiveness of critical factors affecting the corrosion behavior had changed with the lapse of time, as demonstrated by comparing data for the initial year and for five years.
