Na+ ion in magadiite was exchanged by typical element ions (Mg2+, Ca2+, Al3+) and transition element ions (Co2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Fe3+). The transition element ion tended to superfluously make ion exchange. When the ion exchanged magadiites were further treated with dil. HC1 solution, transition element ion made ion exchange only 50-80% by H+ ion, while typical element ion quantitatively exchanged. When the ion exchanged magadiites was treated with ethylene glycol, the transition element ion exchanged samples did not swell almost, while typical element ion exchanged samples swelled at d (001)=1.7nm. From these results, it was considered that transition element ion has done the peculiar adsorption on the basis of strong interaction. The results of (1) IR absorption spectra, (2) the change of d (001) value before and after the treatment in a dil. HC1 solution, and (3) the change in color tone of ion exchanged magadiite with treatments suggested that transition element ion had formed the complex which made surface functional group (=Si-O-, =Si-OH) and H2O to be ligands in the interlayer of magadiite.
