Abstract Helping to quit smoking patients is an important duty of dentists to maintain the general and oral health of patients. Some undergraduate dental students about tobacco, and do not realize that they will help their patients to quit smoking as dentists in the future. The purpose of this study was to help undergraduate dental students acquire general knowledge of tobacco, the health hazards of smoking and the role of dentists in providing support for quitting smoking through e-learning contents, and to examine the learning effects and changes in their awareness.
A total of 653 undergraduate dental students who agreed with the purpose of the research participated in this study. Before e-learning about tobacco, they completed a pre-questionnaire about their general knowledge of tobacco and the harmful effects of smoking on general and oral health. The self-learning time using the e-learning contents was about 15 minutes. Then we evaluated the learning effects and changes in students’ awareness of smoking based on their responses to the post-questionnaire.
It was found that short-term e-learning about tobacco increased the students knowledge of tobacco and motivated them to provide smoking cessation support. In addition, the learning content encouraged them to quit smoking themselves. It is necessary to improve tobacco education further according to students’ age, grade and smoking habits, and to provide a new program for our students to practice smoking cessation support.
