Removal capability of smear layer of root canal by NaClO and H₂O₂ mixed solution

Abstract

Abstract : Alternate irrigation of root canal with NaClO and H₂O₂ has been routinely used in Endodontic treatment. The authors studied removal capability of the smear layer of root canal irrigants, NaClO, H₂O₂ and EDTA, by using SEM.

 The smear layer could not be removed by the immersion in NaClO, H₂O₂ and mixed solution of NaClO & H₂O₂, by the irrigation with NaClO, and by alternate irrigation with NaClO, H₂O₂. However, irrigation with H₂O₂ and mixed solution of NaClO & H₂O₂ could remove the smear layer and the orifices of the dentinal tubules were observed. Immersion in EDTA and alternate irrigation with NaClO, H₂O₂ after immersion in EDTA, the smear layers were completely removed.
