Abstract : Alternate irrigation of root canal with NaClO and H2O2 has been routinely used in Endodontic treatment. The authors studied removal capability of the smear layer of root canal irrigants, NaClO, H2O2 and EDTA, by using SEM.
The smear layer could not be removed by the immersion in NaClO, H2O2 and mixed solution of NaClO & H2O2, by the irrigation with NaClO, and by alternate irrigation with NaClO, H2O2. However, irrigation with H2O2 and mixed solution of NaClO & H2O2 could remove the smear layer and the orifices of the dentinal tubules were observed. Immersion in EDTA and alternate irrigation with NaClO, H2O2 after immersion in EDTA, the smear layers were completely removed.
