A 21-year-old Japanese male presented with a history of eruption and respiratory discomfort after eating baked salmon 3 years ago. Thereafter, he experienced allergic symptoms after the ingestion of boiled conger eel, baked Pacific cod, eel and Pacific saury. He also experienced wheals after drinking energy drinks containing amino-collagen. Prick to prick tests were positive for heated eel, conger eel and raw Pacific saury, but negative for raw pike conger, pacific cod, bonito, red sea bream, and horse mackerel. ELISA for specific IgE demonstrated that the patient's serum reacted to purified fish collagen. It should be noted that the prick to prick test with raw fish may risk overlooking fish-collagen allergy. IgE activity in collagen is not reduced by heat treatment. Recently, fish collagen is used widely in energy drinks, supplements, and cosmetics. It is necessary for an individual allergic to fish collagen to be careful not to ingest any fish or any of the various products which include fish collagen.
