The mechanical properties of an Al-7%Si-0.6%Mg alloy prepared by a newly developed semi-liquid die casting process in which the granular α phase is made in injection sleeve are investigated. The grain size of the casting is finer than that of thixocasting. No sever segregation that appeared in squeeze casting is observed. Less Al-Si-Fe compounds appeared in the casting compared with that of the other two casting methods. Thus the results indicate that the mechanical properties of the castings prepared by semi-liquid casting are better than those of other two casting methods.
