Rolled plates of corrosion resistant aluminum alloy for marine use were welded by TIG and MIG to metal mold and sand mold cast aluminum alloy plates with similar compositions. The mechanical properties of the weld joints were examined and factors influencing the joint strength were studied. Experiments showed that the weld joints of the rolled and casting plates had tensile strengths comparable with those of the base cast metals. The weld metal region showed tensile strengths higher than the base metals, that result in failure at the base metal in the tensile tests. The strongest joint was obtained in the MIG welded metal mold cast plate. TIG yields good weld joint free of gas holes, but its joint strength is inferior to TIG, due possibly to the thermal effects on the base metal.
