The stirring of multi-phase liquid is one of the most important techniques for fabricating metal foams, metal matrix composites and so on. The influence of stirring conditions on the particle distribution in liquid and the addition of non-wetting particles was investigated using an aqueous solution model. For agitating parameters, the height of a lower propeller from the crucible bottom, H, the distance of two propellers, D, and the impeller angle of the upper or lower propeller, θU, θL were changed. From these experiments, we confirmed that the optimum stirring conditions of the apparatus which was used in these experiments were θU: 60°, θL: 30°, H: 10mm and D: 30mm.
For the verification of these conditions, aluminum foams were made by powder decomposition in the melt process with the optimized stirring conditions, and fine aluminum foams with high foamability were successfully obtained.
