Abstract

Several trials were conducted for quantitatively evaluating the combustion characteristics of exothermic mold materials by means of unidirectional combustion test of elongated specimens. It was, however, found that the unidirectional combustion of elongated specimens can not be easily realized in the true sense because of several reasons, including the need for oxygen supply into the combustion zone. The initial objective was partially realized by measuring temperature in hollow cylindrical test pieces. Casting experiments were made as suggested by the results of the tests. Drastic increase of insulating properties was confirmed by enhancing oxygen supply to riser sleeves and also applying insulating blanket behind the sleeves.
