A vertical-type high-speed tandem twin-roll casting (VT-TRC) is efficient and economical process because the present method can produce three layer clad strips from molten metal directly in a single step. Interface bonding conditions of the A3003/A4045 clad strip fabricated by VT-TRC were investigated in the present study. To reproduce several contact conditions of A3003 strip and A4045 melt in the clad strip produced by VT-TRC, A4045 melt was poured onto the A3003 strip with different surface conditions and the interface of the microstructure was examined.
A4045 did not bond with the A3003 strip of room temperature. This is considered to be due to the large temperature difference between the strip and melt and the oxide layer existing on the strip. Bonding was achieved for the A3003 strip at 500℃, and the strip surface partially melted. In this case, the oxide layer on the strip may have been removed by the surface melting. A small amount of Mn was also detected at the A4045 side of the interface of the A3003/A4045 clad strip fabricated by VT-TRC. This suggests that the A3003/A4045 bonding of VT-TRC is achieved by limited partial surface melting and the removal of the oxide layer from the A3003 strip surface due to the heat input from A4045 melt.
