Effect of environmental factors on survival and growth of Shorea curtisii plantation in Peninsula Malaysia

Shorea curtisii Dyer ex Brandis is called locally as “Meranti Seraya” and the timber is highly useful in the Peninsula Malaysia. In this report, we show survival and growth of S. curtisii trees planted in four different sized plots over 18 years. The survival proportion was rapidly decreased in the first 5 years and gradually decreased in the recent 13 years in all types of plots. Mean height was rapidly increased in the first 6 years and gradually increased in the recent 13 years. Mean diameter lineally increased through the observed term. From the analysis of all plots, the plot size gave positive effect to the survival proportion of S. curtisii planted. From the analysis to all planted trees, canopy opening gave the positive effect to height and diameter growth of planted trees. On the other hand, slope angle gave negative effect to them. Thus, the environmental factors produced serious effects to survival and growth of S. curtisii planted.
